Atomically modulated Cu single-atom catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions towards high-power density Zn– and Al–air batteries

Herein, Cu single-atom-encapsulated hollow carbon–nitrogen spheres (CuSA@CNS) are fabricated through a solution process, confining optimal electronic structures reinforcing Cu–N4 active sites. CuSA@CNS demonstrate a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.95 V, mass activity, and a durability of 5000 cycles. Accordingly, CuSA@CNS present record-high power densities of 371 and 289 mW cm−2 for Zn– and Al–air batteries. The rechargeable Zn–air battery demonstrates an unprecedented small charge–discharge voltage and stable cycling for harsh operations at 50 mA cm−2, outperforming Pt/C.

This work on Cu single atom catalysts shows how precise atomic design can push Zn and Al air batteries to impressive power densities while maintaining durability over thousands of cycles. Achieving strong performance beyond Pt C under harsh current conditions is a meaningful step toward practical energy storage solutions. As advanced battery systems move closer to commercial and transport applications, protecting supporting infrastructure also matters. For service fleets handling equipment or mobile power units, installing a battery lock for Hino vehicles helps safeguard assets and maintain operational reliability.
The performance achieved with CuSA@CNS is impressive, especially reaching such high power densities in both Zn and Al air batteries while maintaining stability over 5000 cycles. Advancing single atom catalysts to outperform Pt based systems shows how fast energy materials research is moving. It is exciting to imagine these breakthroughs translating into lighter and more efficient devices for everyday use.
